A thoughtful design was created combining open and private spaces in Nonthaburi, Thailand.
‘Baan Y’, designed by Anonym Studio, is composed of four bedrooms, two sitting rooms, and one studio. The architects, Phongphat Ueasangkhomset and Panduangjai Roojnawate, were restricted by the unusual shape of the block, which is a Y-shaped land plot. They cleverly formed small courtyards and gardens to achieve a micro-ecology, connecting the living spaces. With the building material choices and placement, they have combined different fragments of the urban context through the various layers of the building.
Even though Nonthaburi province, in which the house is situated, is one of the satellite cities of the Bangkok Metropolitan Area, it is distant from the chaos of the centre of Bangkok. But as the rapid growth of Bangkok may affect the context of this house, an attentive solution to the visual and psychological distance between the house and its context was taken into consideration when creating the living spaces.
The design for the house’s environment was created to feel simultaneously private as well as open. With the restriction caused by the Y-shape of the land plot, the plot size, and the functional requirements, the architectural language of the house is articulated within the relationship amongst the small open courtyard and narrow strips of the garden along the house. The white painted steel brise-soleil reduces heat while drawing the surroundings into the interior spaces.
The vivid and colourful detached wooden houses in the neighbourhood are visible when one moves freely inside the house, and they become a part of the environment of the house itself.
