With the challenge to incorporate unique design within a European-facade Vo Trong Nghia and the team at VTN Architects turn Nocenco Cafe into a city icon with bamboo.
In an area that has suffered immense damage as a result of the Vietnam War, Vinh City in North Vietnam has faced a decades of renovation inspired by European colonial design.
For this project, VTN Architects, led by principal architects Vo Trong Nghia and Nguyen Tat Dat were briefed by the clients to maintain this European facade and to create a unique and attractive addition that would convert the building into an icon of the city.

The renovation project comprised a cafe on the seventh floor and a rooftop of a middle-rise concrete building in the city centre.
The top floor and roof have great views over the surrounding low-rise houses, stretching towards the river, magnificent forest scape and buildings across the city also.
Their challenge was to create an impact on the building by inserting a new structure using unique and local material.

After studying several local materials such as brick, stone the architects chose bamboo to work with. "Through our experience, we know bamboo is easy to access in this tropical climate which reduces construction time and budget," they said.
Bamboo seemed a logical choice for the designers due to its light-weight quality, cost-effectiveness, and its ability to be sourced anywhere and be installed without additional structural support.

The design for the top floor comprised covering the existing concrete structure with bamboo material, using it as an element to create spacial qualities in the area. The ceiling is also covered with bamboo which means pedestrians in the city can recognise the space from the street below.

There are 10 bamboo columns to hide the existing structure and 4 additional columns. These columns elegantly divide the space into different private areas. The enormous dome structure on the roof - which can be recognized from any place in the city - a rooftop club, has created a gathering space for all residents of Vinh city.
