Howald will partner with international investors across Asia Pacific to develop solutions for their global real estate investment needs in collaboration with Colliers’ global capital markets teams. Reporting to Terence Tang, Managing Director, Capital Markets & Investment Services | Asia, he is responsible for growing cross-border investment activity in Asia Pacific and leading international client development. He will work with global clients to execute investment strategies, including capital sourcing, acquisition advisory, equity capital raising, debt placement, and transaction management.

Across Asia Pacific, cross-border real estate transaction volumes have risen by 23% year-on-year in the first half of 2021, supported by strong deal flows in several core markets, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, Korea, China, and Japan. Global capital flows, especially from institutional investors, has been growing significantly due to increasing allocation into Asia Pacific real estate assets. John’s appointment will maximise opportunities from increasing capital flow into cross-border transactions in the region, while strengthening our service to deliver exceptional results for global institutional investors.

Howald joins Colliers from JLL Japan, where he led the International Investment team, focusing on cross-border investment and structuring advice for direct real estate transactions and equity raising. He brings with him more than 15 years of experience in securing investment opportunities and divesting large-scale assets and portfolios, working with global institutional investors. Howald previously held positions at Ernst & Young in New York, focused on real estate, hospitality, and mergers and acquisitions advisory.
To further strengthen our International Capital expertise, Colliers also announced today the appointment of Melvin Chay, Director, International Capital | Asia Pacific, based in Singapore. He will collaborate closely with Howald to attract international capital into Colliers’ key markets in Asia Pacific. Chay has over 10 years of experience in the real estate industry and had worked at Colliers at the beginning of his career. Chay was previously with CDL and was responsible for direct real estate acquisition and development opportunities across multiple asset classes, including residential, commercial, industrial and hospitality, focusing on Singapore and China markets. Chay’s enterprising spirit and expertise will grow the team’s capabilities in the Asia Pacific capital markets.
Across Asia, Colliers has also been attracting industry leaders to strengthen its Capital Markets & Investment Services capabilities in the region since the beginning of 2021; these include Senior Directors, Deval Valia (India), Nilanjan Chakraborty (India), Yasuhiro Kanno (Japan); Directors, Nicholas Wilson (Asia), Donald Goh (Singapore), Masahiko Kawauchi (Japan), David Li (Southwest China), Paul Chua (Philippines); Senior Associate Director, Vilas Chabukswar (India); and Associate Director, Andrew Sohn (Korea).
Bolstering our global Capital Markets network, London-based Chris Pilgrim wasappointed as Director of Global Capital Markets in June this year, focused on connecting global capital from Europe to opportunities across all regions and asset classes. Pilgrim will work closely with Howald and our other global Capital Markets teams. In addition, Colliers has seen an expansion of roles of its Capital Markets leaders in EMEA, including Luke Dawson’s appointment as Managing Director, EMEA Cross-Border Capital Markets and Richard Divall’s appointment as EMEA Cross-Border Capital Markets Director.
