What began as a way for one man to satisfy his favourite pastime has now become an opportunity to own some of the most exclusive real estate in New Zealand’s Wakatipu basin.
Tom Tusher made his mark on the business world as the President of Levi Strauss, but one of his lasting contributions has stemmed from leisure.
Mr Tusher was in Australasia scouting retail space nearly 50 years ago when he came across a parcel of land on the shores of Lake Wakatipu particularly suited to his love of fly fishing.
After buying the land with his wife Pauline in the early 1970s, he preceded to build a modest dwelling with the plan to use it as a base for fishing, horse riding and reading.
It was from these humble beginnings that the concept for the world-renowned Blanket Bay Lodge was born, with Tusher returning more than two decades later to develop the luxury accommodation venue.

But the story doesn’t end there.
Recognising the potential of the surrounding area, Mr Tucker teamed up with local developer John Darby to acquire Wyuna sheep station - a leasehold property of approximately 40,000 acres.
What followed was a ten-year process involving a deal with the New Zealand Government to turn the leasehold into a freehold on the condition they would give up a portion of the land, while allowing for grazing to continue in some areas.
After a four-year construction, Wyuna Preserve was showcased to the world in 2010 in the form of 34 exclusive and private lots available for sale.
Mr Tusher says the almost unbelievable views of pristine lake and mountainscape coupled with a location just 30 minutes to Queenstown and its International Airport attracted astute buyers from around the globe.
“We have people from Hong Kong, Switzerland, Singapore, Australia, Europe, United Kingdom and the United States + thankfully now several Kiwi owners”.
Today, only six exclusive lots are available.
Strict rules now protect against anything similar to the Wyuna community ever being created in such a pristine environment natural environment.
