Four major hotels are planned for the Mandalika region of the pristine island amid infrastructure improvements.
Lombok's pristine beaches remain highly desirable, with four five-star hotels planned for the Mandalika region. The area is set for further expansion amid improvements in infrastructure and interest from major international hotel groups. The four luxury hotels slated for construction in Mandalika, Lombok, are French-based AccorHotels, which has already begun construction, French-based Club Med, Jiva Samudera Biru from Indonesia, and Lee's from South Korea.
Mandalika is situated in the south of Lombok island, and has 7.5 kilometres of Indian Ocean beachfront, pristine bays, white sandy beaches, and excellent diving, snorkelling and fishing sites. The area is a 20-minute drive from Lombok airport. The region has newly built roads, but further infrastructure development is planned, with the area designated a special economic zone. The Indonesian Tourism Development Corporation's president director Abdullar M Mansoer said, "We have four five-star hotels for the start, and we have prepared the infrastructure." He said the ITDC plans to have 20 starred hotels in the area within 20 years. The Vice President of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla, called for faster infrastructure development in the area. Although he admitted that the conditions in Mandalika were better than early developments in Nusa Dua. ITDC has entered into a partnership with US-based EBD Bauer to build a desalination plant, which will improve the area's access to clean water.
